People who are paid to write about sports, specifically a sport with which they have much knowledge, and they screw it up by not understanding the whole picture.
Example #1: Yesterday in the Kansas City Star Jason Whitlock (AKA Jason Witless) trashed the Chiefs yet again in another article. This bothers me for 2 reasons.
1) He promised not to bash the Chiefs too hard in his pre-season segment because he understood the team was young and there will be many mistakes made by the team. He would reserve his criticism for C.P.
2) HE WRITES FOR THE HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER! I understand his articles are opinions, and yes I agree with a lot of his opinions that he has about the team (not where he believed Jeff George would be a great fit), but don't sell out your home town team! The article asked Coach Camera to bench Brady this week and save him for the Jets, he promised we would still stink and alluded to the fact the Pats could start Croyle and still win.
Example #2: Bill Simmons wrote this gem:
PATRIOTS (-16.5) over Chiefs
Big week for fantasy mega-sleeper Jabar Gaffney: Something like nine catches, 85 yards, one TD and a near-riot on tens of thousands of fantasy football waiver wires next week. I can't think of a better Week 1 opponent for the Pats than Kansas City, the team that recently launched a rebuilding effort by trading its 26-year-old stud defensive end for draft picks. And you thought the Royals were the worst-run team in town? Watch this!
I have no reservations about the fact the Chiefs will 99.9% assuredly lose to the Pats. I even agree that the team is not very well run at the moment, but where he screws up is that he can't comprehend WHY the Chiefs would ever trade Jared Allen for Draft picks. Pretty easy if you think about it:
J.A. has been in the league for what, 4 years? In those 3 with the Chiefs he had 2 D.U.I.s. Even before he joined the Chiefs he was a risky pick out of Idaho with him running into trouble with the law. Ok got all that?
Now lets go back 8 years in Chiefs history....
Its 2000 and the Chiefs sign Eric Warfield to a big contract (big by KC standards anyway) and then flashforward to 2005.... Warfield gets arrested for his 3rd DUI and is suspended by the league. How about those career stats that warrented a big contract?
Tackles 392
Sacks 1
INT 20
Over 7 years with K.C.!
Jump back to 2007, J.A. gets his 2nd DUI and is suspended by the league. The difference? J.A. is upset because the Chiefs won't negotiate a long term big contract with him. So we trade him to Minensota and draft Dorsey then Albert. Your telling me this didn't work in the Chiefs favor?? Thats mis-managment by trading a troubled player while he still has value and the reigning sack king? I think out of all the blunders KC has made, thats the smartest thing they've ever done.
Now maybe J.A. has a great year this year, which I highly doubt, I still say so what. Might wanna check out how many sacks J.A. had in the 4th quarter of games last year (0!).

Needed some laughs today
Needed tsome laughs today so I enlisted the help of Mitch Hedberg:
I like swiss cheese. It's the only cheese you can draw with a pencil and still identify. You can draw American cheese, but someone will think it's cheddar. "That's Swiss!" "Yes, it is." "But how did you know?" "Because of the f**k holes!" Swiss cheese is a rip-off; it's is the only cheese you can bite and miss. "Hey Mitch - does that sandwich have cheese on it?" "Every now and then!" I got some swiss air on that bite.
I opened up a container of yogurt, and under the lid it said "Please Try Again," because apparently they were having a contest I was unaware of. But I thought I might have opened the yogurt wrong. Or maybe Yoplait was trying to inspire me — "C'mon, Mitchell, don't give up. Please try again. A message of inspiration from your friends at Yoplait — Fruit on the bottom, hope on top."
I played golf, I'm not good at golf, I never got a hole-in-one ... but I did hit a guy. And that's way more satisfying. You're supposed to yell "fore," but I was too busy mumbling, "There ain't no way that's gonna hit him." I hit a guy in one. What's par for hitting a guy? One. If you hit a guy in two, you are an a*sho*e.
They say Diet Dr Pepper tastes just like regular Dr Pepper. Well, then, they f**k up!
My apartment is infested with koala bears. It's the cutest infestation ever. Way better than cockroaches. When I turn on the light, a bunch of koala bears scatter, but I don't want them to. I'm like, 'Hey... Hold on fellows... Let me hold one of you, and feed you a leaf.'
I was gonna get a candy bar; the button I was supposed to push was "HH", so I went to the side, I found the "H" button, I pushed it twice. F-in' potato chips came out, man, 'cause they had a "HH" button, for Christ's sakes! You need to let me know. I'm not familiar with the concept of "HH". I did not learn my AA-BB-CC's. God god, dammit dammit.
Fish are always eating other fish. If fish could scream, the ocean would be loud as shit. You would not want to submerge your head, nothing but fish going "Ahhh, f*ck! I thought I looked like that rock!"
I've got an oscillating fan at my house. The fan goes back and forth. It looks like the fan is saying "No". So I like to ask it questions that a fan would say no to. Do you keep my hair in place? Do you keep my documents in order? Do you have three settings? Liar! My fan f**king lied to me. Now I will pull the pin up. Now you ain't sayin' shi*.
I just bought a 2-bedroom house, but I think I get to decide how many bedrooms there are, don't you? "F you, real estate lady! This bedroom has an oven in it! This bedroom's got a lot of people sitting around watching TV. This bedroom is a.k.a. a hallway. This bedroom's over in that guy's house! Sir, you have one of my bedrooms, are you aware? Don't decorate it."
I was walking by a dry cleaner at 3 a.m., and it said "Sorry, we're closed." You don't have to be sorry. It's 3 a.m., and you're a dry cleaner. It would be ridiculous for me to expect you to be open. I'm not gonna walk by at ten and say, "Hey, I walked by at three, you guys were closed. Someone owes me an apology. This jacket would be halfway done!"
When I play the South, they say "y'all" in the South. They take out the "O" and the "U". So when I'm in the South I try to talk like that so people understand me. "Hello, can I have a bowl of chicken noodle s-p? Come on, I'm in the South, you understand. I mean I'm in the S-th, and I want some s-p!" "I stubbed my toe, -ch!" "I need to lay down on the c-ch!" "I need to get the fu*k -t of the S-th!"
I hope the next time I move I get a real easy phone number, something that's real easy to remember. Something like two two two two two two two two. I would say "Sweet." And then people would say, "Mitch, how do I get ahold of you?" I'd say, "Just press two for a while. And when I answer, you will know you have pressed two enough."

Mo Sun's New Poker Room
Mohegan Sun finally re-opened their poker room. I still recall quite vividly the letter I received in the mail dated 09/03/03 describing that they were closing their poker room down due to lack of buisness (what a croc).
I found out later on from a dealer at foxwoods that the "real" reason they shut down was that there were illicit activities going on behind the scenes of the poker room mitigated by the over-seerer himself. But due to a clause in his contract they could not fire him? So instead they shut the room down until such a time when said contract was expired.
So almost 5 years later to the day, the new Casino of the Wind is hosting the Poker Room, and I was there to test it out Sunday night @ 9:30pm and played until 6:30am Monday. We played 1/2 NL.
Wow was the play horrible. First hand after I sit I get dealt J-J in the cutoff. Dude to my right raises to 7, I reraise to 21. BB raises to 50. OR folds. I tank, BB is goading me into pushing all-in. I just call. Flop has a K but not much else. BB bets his remaing 40. Its 40 for me to call into a pot of 140. He keeps trying to get me to call and pay him off. Hes a little drunk but I thought I probably had him. I call and show the Js, he flips up 9s. I win. Not a bad start.
My bud Joe was doing even better than me, the card gods blessed him with sets everytime he had a pair, and people obliged by throwing money at him everytime.
I got pokerstared (or fulltilted) after i limped on the button with 5-6ss. Flop is 2s-3h-4s. I call a 15 bet.
Turn is a 3. Guy bets 70, I jam for his last 80. He shows down 3-4.
I pay him back later when I slowplay my set of 5s and make a bet he cant fold to on the river.
Biggest hand of the night for me was this one:
Moved to a new table, I find 10-10 I have no reads on anyone. I raise in MP to 12. Button raises to 40, SB thinks for a bit then calls. (By the way, Button is doing a Phil Laak getup, and the SB ironically looks exactly like Todd Brunson, I shit you not)I call.
Flop is 6-3-5 two clubs.
Todd checks, I check, Phil bets 70. Todd thinks for a bit and grudingly folds. I think for a bit and decide to go big or go home. I raise to 210 and he insta-mucks. Smelled like a lower pair to me.
All-in-all after a nearly 200 buck deficit, I leave up 275. My buddy also had a nice profit even though he game a good portion of his early winnings back.
Some other tidbits:
All the dealers are new and were making tons of mistakes, most forgivable.
I was in a hand were I raised to 15 on the button with A-K. BB raised to 50, all the limpers folded and it folded around to me. I tanked for a grand 5 seconds, the dealer brought the chips to the center, pushed them to the 50 raiser and mucked the deck, all while I still had cards and was thinking. Floor was called and they ineptly were trying to reconstruct the hand. (Took 5 trys for them to figure out it was pre-flop, not on the flop). Finally things got sorted out and I ended up folding.
Rules that differ from F-woods:
No time charged, just rake. ($4 max at 1-2 NL)
No buying the button
No straddling
No "closest to the button rule" If there is a chop the players kicker in the hand (even if its not technically played) determines the extra chip. If the hands are identical (K-8 vs K- suit will determine the extra chip.
Dealer assured us they would have a rules board posted in the room by Tuesday. Also apparently tourneys (didnt elaborate) would start Tuesday.

Brick In The Wall - Pink Floyd
Today I start off by offering this:
Birthday song
Mine was the title of the post, have fun and post your bday song if you get the itch.
BR is stagnant around 330, which is good cause its over 300, but I feel like I could be doing a lot better. Mostly been sticking to just 1/2 HORSE as I like change, playing just Razz for hours on end, especially with people who sit down with 5k bankrolls at a 1/2, can drag on you, and I like Razz so I dont want to burn out on it like NLHE.
I hope everyone is doing well, I mean to write these long-winded personal posts but I find I get too down after thinking about them and I end up saving them in the "saved" file.
Thanks to all those who read and comment on my little space of internet. See you all at the mook tonight probably.

Sometimes Coincedence is just plain scary
Last night was supposed to be a home game that I go to. Originally it was shceduled to be held at some other than the regular host's house, but the wife had a change of mind.
So the host sent out an email that we had 4 people, and if we couldnt find one more poker was cancelled for this month. I spent most of my Thursday night trying to convince someone, anyone, to be our 5th player. Eventually about mid-Friday I sent Jason a text saying I tried and failed, no one was able to play.
So instead of getting ready for a poker game, I headed over to my house, grabbed the mail, grabbed my FFBL draft kit that arrived, met up with the gf and her mom and eventually settled on me going back home to her parents house.
As soon as I walked in the door I knew something was wrong. Alissa's dad was holding our little dog Spike (a minature chihuahua)was breathing weird and his mouth couldnt close. Her dad had just given them a doggy treat about 5 mins before I walked in and apparently Spike had had swallowed the thing whole anticipating a second treat.
This had happened before so Ik new to just rub his throat and try to coax him to throw it up, but this time was different. His tongue was turning blue and while he was trying to puke it up he was actually only puking up some pink foamy substance instead.
Liss' dad called her and her mom and they raced home, as soon as they got home we jumped in the car and took him to the pet emergency room. No sooner had I walked in the door with him one of the vets asked "choking?" i said yes, he grabbed him and took him into the ER.
Long story short, they stuck a tube down his throat to stabilize the breathing, they removed the treat (after sedating him) and other than some swelling in his throat he was going to be ok.
Actually, I knew he would be ok before they told us...while in the waiting room I heard his loud obnoxious bark (he picked up a howl when he was a pup because he use to hang out with a pair of Beagles). So he went from on the verge of choking to death to yapping his head off in the ER.
So anyway hes ok now, still being cautious what we feed him, and hes allowed to drink too. Just think it was amazing that 1) I couldnt find a 5th poker player for the game 2) Liss and her mom had wanted to go out to eat somewhere, I told them I wasnt feeling up to it, which lead to me going home.
